Tour Plan
Early morning departure from Marrakech for an enjoyable journey south, meandering through the Moulay Brahim gorge and upper valleys to reach the elevated foothills of the Western High Atlas Mountains and our starting point at Imi Oughlad (1450m).
With the Jbel Toubkal, towering at 4167m as the highest peak in North Africa, Aglzim at 3650m, and Aksoual at 3884m, looming ahead of us, we disembark from our vehicle and rendezvous with a team of Berber muleteers.
We commence our ascent in a north-westerly direction, following switchback mule tracks for a 2-hour acclimatization hike. Along the way, we pass through cornfields, wooded areas, pine forests, and juniper trees until we reach the Tiz n'Tachete (2000m), where we pause to admire the scenic views of the Imlil and Ait Oussaden valleys below. Afterward, we continue for another half an hour, arriving at Imi n'Ifri for a delightful field picnic. Next, we embark on a leisurely hike of approximately 2 and a half hours, heading southwest along a dirt track that leads us to the Assif n'Ait Oussaden and the terraced red clay village of Tiziane (1750m). Here, we settle into our bivouac/gîte for overnight accommodation.
After our morning meal, we embark on our trek along the Assif n'Ait Oussaden valley, traversing the walnut orchards, ascending to Tizi n'Taghrhourte (1995m), and continuing through a rare, nearly level stretch until we reach Assaka spring. Here, we will pause for our outdoor meal in the midst of a breathtaking stillness, following a relatively effortless walk of approximately 2.5 hours. Our afternoon excursion guides us along the forest fringes until we arrive at the Berber village of D'Knt (1870m) or Agouns n Assoul, where we will enjoy our evening meal and spend the night in a bivouac or gite.
We set off for our morning’s 3 hours hike up through groves of walnut trees, fields of corn and barley to greet many sheeps and goatherders – and women and children bent over with 20kg loads of faggots and dried herbs. We traverse the Tizi n’Tagdalte to the descent amongst the juniper trees till we come to a small spring set amongst the trees, where we will stop for our picnic. Once refreshed, we are off down winding tracks of upper slopes for some 3 hours to come to a small river at the beginning of the valley of Assif n’Ait Oussaden. From here we enter the village of Tizi Oussem (1850m) then up to the summer village Of Tamsoult for our camp/hut.
Following our morning meal, we embark on a journey towards the east, engaging in a moderately challenging trek along twisting paths used by mules. Our destination is the Tizi Aguelzim, situated at an elevation of 3550m. From there, we continue our expedition for approximately three hours towards the southeast until we reach the Toubkal Refuge. This refuge signifies the point where the snow begins to appear in the spring, and it stands at an altitude of 3207m. It is in this location that we will enjoy our evening meal while camping around the refuge.
An incredibly early morning meal to commence around 6am., in order to achieve, following a demanding three-hour uphill trek, the highest summit in the Maghreb (4167m). The view from this point is absolutely breathtaking. When you feel prepared, we will proceed along the Ikkhibi Sud or South Cirque, accompanied by your guide, for a direct and uncomplicated descent of 2 to 3 hours back to the Refuge where we will enjoy a picnic. Following the midday meal, we will embark on our
journey towards the northern direction, traversing sharply declining and meandering paths on the elevated slopes of the Valley of Assif n’Isouhouanem n’Ouagounss, heading towards the Shrine of Sidi Chamharouch. Located adjacent to a waterfall, this site encompasses a sacred ‘marabout’ shrine, likely a vestige of an ancient culture predating Islam, yet it is off-limits to non-Muslims. Another 2 hours of downhill hiking will lead us to the village of Imlil, which serves as the starting
point for most treks, before we take a taxi back to Marrakech.
